All about non-woven vinyl wallpaper: the pros and cons of this coating

Vinyl wallpaper is a popular wall covering material. They are versatile, durable, a wide range of colors and textures allow them to be used in any room and interior design. The non-woven base adds positive quality characteristics to them. Let’s evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of vinyl wallpaper on non-woven fabric.

What is non-woven vinyl wallpaper?

Previously, in the manufacture of vinyl wallpaper, a paper base was used. But when you stick it, it gets wet, and when it dries, it shrinks. As a result, the joints could diverge, from which the aesthetics of the room suffered. For the same reason, they were not suitable for rooms with high humidity.

The non-woven base, which is interlining, does not behave so capriciously. Therefore, vinyl wallpapers with such a base keep their shape and last longer. They ideally cover the surface of the walls, do not get wet from the glue and do not deform over time.

An additional advantage was the feature when pasting, when there is no need to smear wallpaper strips with glue. It is enough to process the surface of the wall, attach dry wallpaper to the wall and press them carefully.

It is only important to choose the right texture and color of wallpaper for the style of the room in a huge range of finishing materials offered on the market.

What is the difference between vinyl wallpaper and non-woven wallpaper?

The main difference between these types of wallpaper is the coating.

Vinyl wallpapers are a two-layer coating with an upper decorative layer consisting of polyvinyl chloride and a non-woven base, while non-woven ones are homogeneous from a dense fabric.

Non-woven wallpaper is less resistant to mechanical stress, they are afraid of moisture, absorb odors and are more expensive than vinyl. Therefore, the latter are often chosen for their strength and ease of care.

However, walls covered with non-woven wallpaper, for example, in the living room, look luxurious. They are safe, environmentally friendly, do not emit toxic fumes during combustion and are resistant to ultraviolet radiation.

When choosing wallpaper for rooms in the house, several factors should be correlated:

  • the presence of high humidity;
  • the need to periodically clean from contamination;
  • the surface of the wall is fairly flat.

In the manufacture of non-woven vinyl wallpaper, the same vinyl is used, but different application technology allows you to create different looks. This is how wallpapers are distinguished:

  • with foam vinyl. They have an interesting texture, but not too dense. Therefore, such wallpapers are considered “breathable”. At the same time, their advantage is also moisture resistance. They are heavy, but cover the walls perfectly;

  • embossed with a deep pattern;

  • smooth, with a flat layer of vinyl. Such wallpapers are devoid of porosity, but they are perfect for rooms where there is a need to frequently wash the surface of the walls. This room in the house is the kitchen. The vinyl layer makes the wallpaper resistant to external influences;

  • paintable models. Very popular among similar vinyl coverings. Considered universal for any premises, vinyl can be easily repainted repeatedly;

  • silkscreen printing on vinyl wallpaper makes it luxurious. The manufacturing technology is not simple, therefore the price of the product is somewhat higher than simple analogues. They are particularly durable and resistant to washing.

The popularity of vinyl wallpaper is explained by a large list of their advantages:

  • strength, which gives the coating the use of two layers of materials: interlining and vinyl;
  • resistance to moisture and the ability to wash the surface not only with water, but also use detergents. Some species do well in damp areas, such as bathrooms;
  • The durability of vinyl wallpapers is their most important quality. They perfectly adhere to the walls, do not fade, do not lose their textured pattern;
  • universal coating for any type of interior. Vinyl can imitate any material, so these wallpapers are easy to adapt to the desired style of the room. It can create the effect of plaster, stone, brick, wood, fabric, etc.

Not without vinyl wallpaper and negative sides:

  • they do not “breathe”, or rather lack the air permeability of the wall. This affects the microclimate in the room, and poses a threat to the development of bacteria on the wall. To avoid this, the walls before pasting can be treated with antifungal glue and choose wallpaper with a porous structure;
  • Difficulty in wallpapering. It is important to choose the right glue and carefully join the sheets. It’s usually easier to do this with two people;
  • vinyl flooring is less environmentally friendly compared to other types of wall materials;
  • relatively high cost. However, in relation to durability, they justify their price.

For the calculation, information is needed on the width of the sheet and the length in the roll in order to determine how many rolls will need to be purchased for pasting the walls. It is always contained on the manufacturer’s label. As a rule, non-woven vinyl wallpapers are available in a wide version: 100 cm wide by 10 meters long. But you can also find narrow specimens 53 cm wide in a 10-meter roll.

Some manufacturers sell these wallpapers in other sizes. It depends on the thickness of the vinyl coating and other characteristics of the final product.

Can they be dyed?

The ability to repeatedly paint is a feature of vinyl wallpaper for painting. Therefore, they are perfect for those who want to change the interior without much hassle and expense. You just need to choose the right paint and transform the room by repainting the walls.

What kind of glue is needed?

Non-woven vinyl wallpapers are heavy and this must be taken into account when choosing an adhesive. There should be a special industrial composition, which includes not only an adhesive, but also antibacterial additives. It must be diluted strictly in accordance with the instructions on the package, as a result, a viscous, thick mass is formed.

All manufacturers of wallpaper adhesives have options for vinyl wallpapers in their range. Among the manufacturers there are both Russian brands and European ones:

  • Moment;
  • Quelyd;
  • Metylan;
  • Kleo;
  • Pufas.

The consumption of glue is indicated on the package, it depends on the thickness of the wallpaper and the footage of the wall. It should be borne in mind that glue is not applied to the wallpaper, it is covered with a wall. In some cases it is required to apply a layer twice.

On average, one pack of glue weighing 500 g is able to paste over 60-80 square meters. m. wall area. It’s about 4-5 rolls.
